How do Cold Sparks differ from traditional pyrotechnics?

Cold Spark machines create a controlled spark effect using specialist equipment and a consumable metal-composite powder heated electrically inside the machine. There is no gunpowder, no open flame and no smoke, which is what sets them apart from conventional fireworks and traditional pyrotechnic fountains. The spark fountain runs cooler than traditional pyrotechnics, but appropriate operating procedures, clearances around each machine and your venue's requirements still apply, and guests should stay back from the machine.

Can cold sparklers be used indoors?

They are designed for controlled indoor and outdoor event use, and can often be used indoors subject to the venue's rules and approval. They produce no open flame and minimal smoke, which is why many venues that do not permit traditional fireworks will consider cold sparks. We use them at wedding venues, halls and hotels across Port Elizabeth, Jeffreys Bay and the Eastern Cape, always confirming the effect with the venue first.

Will cold sparklers set off smoke alarms or sprinklers?

In almost every venue, no. The effect produces very little smoke and no significant heat plume. Heat-sensor sprinkler systems are not triggered by the spark fountain. If your venue uses extremely sensitive smoke detectors directly above the dance floor, we'll coordinate with venue staff in advance.

How far do guests need to stand back?

We set up a safe perimeter around each machine — typically 1.5 to 2 metres clear in front of the sparkler. Guests can stand right at the edge of that line, which is why the photos look so close-up and dramatic.

How high do the sparks shoot?

Our machines are tuned for indoor venues and typically throw sparks to about 2 to 3 metres. We can dial the height up or down depending on your ceiling. Minimum recommended ceiling height is around 3 metres for a comfortable effect.

Are they safe near my dress, hair, or the venue's drapes?

Yes. The cool-burning sparks fall and extinguish without scorching fabric — which is exactly why brides choose them for the first dance. We still position machines so the spark fall zone is clear of curtains, drapes and décor.

What's the difference between cold sparklers and real fireworks or pyrotechnics?

Real pyrotechnics use explosive compositions, produce open flame and smoke, and need licensed pyro technicians plus open-air clearance. Cold sparklers use a granulated metallic powder that burns cool, with no flame and very little smoke — making them the only practical 'firework-look' effect for indoor venues and tight schedules.

Is there smoke or smell?

Very little of either. You'll notice a faint metallic scent right after the effect, but no lingering smoke haze and nothing that will set off your wedding photographer's lens or your guests' eyes.

How long does one load last?

Each load typically runs for 30 to 60 seconds depending on the spark height setting. Most couples use one load for the first dance and a second for the grand exit or cake reveal.

When are cold sparklers most commonly used?

First dance, grand entrance, cake cutting, the couple's exit, DJ drops, and corporate brand reveals are the most popular moments. They also pair beautifully with our dry-ice 'dancing on the clouds' effect for the first dance.

Can they be combined with dry ice, CO₂ jets or confetti?

Yes — and they often are. Cold sparks + low-lying dry ice cloud for the first dance is one of our most-booked combinations. We handle programming so each effect fires on cue.

How many machines do I need for my venue?

Two machines flanking the dance floor is the standard setup and what's included in our base package. Larger halls, stages or symmetrical aisle effects may use four. We'll recommend the right count based on photos or a venue walk-through.

Is an operator included?

Yes. Every booking is personally set up and operated by Jacques from Cloud Nine Effects. You don't touch the equipment and your DJ doesn't have to manage cues — we handle the fire-on-cue with your MC or DJ.

What does the venue need to approve the effect?

Venue requirements vary. Please confirm permission with your venue before the event. If the venue requests information about the effect or equipment, Cloud Nine Effects can provide the relevant information where available. Final venue approval remains the responsibility of the client or event planner.

How far in advance should I book?

Peak wedding dates (October to April, especially Saturdays) book out months ahead. For midweek events and off-peak dates, two to four weeks' notice is usually fine. Once you have a venue and date, lock the effect in early.

Do you travel outside Port Elizabeth?

Yes — we regularly cover Jeffreys Bay, St Francis Bay, Kenton-on-Sea, Plettenberg Bay, Addo and most of the Eastern Cape. Travel costs are quoted up front and depend on distance.

How much do cold sparklers cost?

Our minimum bookable Port Elizabeth setup starts from Quoted on request and includes two machines, one 250 g granule pack, full setup and a professional operator on the night. Final pricing may vary depending on location, venue requirements and the selected setup; multi-machine, multi-load and out-of-town setups are quoted on request.
