Indoor Cold Sparks FAQs

What are indoor cold sparks?

They are fountain-style spark effects produced by a machine using a granulate designed for indoor use, without a traditional open flame.

Are cold sparks the same as fireworks?

No. Cold spark machines create a controlled spark effect using specialist equipment and a consumable powder. They are different from conventional fireworks or traditional pyrotechnic fountains. Venue approval and appropriate operating procedures must still be followed.

Can they really be used indoors?

Cold spark machines are designed for controlled event use and can often be used indoors, and they are widely used at indoor receptions. Every venue has its own rules and approval requirements, and suitability also depends on ceiling height, layout and ventilation. We recommend confirming permission with the venue before the event, and Cloud Nine Effects works within the venue's requirements.

Will our venue allow them?

Many venues do, but we never assume approval. We ask you to confirm with your venue, and we are happy to speak to them or your coordinator directly.

What ceiling height is required?

The required clearance depends on the effect height we set. We confirm what is workable once we know the room, and we will reduce the height or recommend a different effect if the space is too low.

Will they set off smoke detectors or sprinklers?

The effect produces very little smoke and no significant heat plume, so heat-sensor sprinkler heads are not triggered by it in normal operation. Optical or highly sensitive smoke detectors directly above the effect are the only realistic concern, and that depends entirely on the venue's detection system and its placement, which is why the venue must be consulted in advance. Some venues will ask for detectors in the immediate area to be managed by their own staff — that is always done by the venue or their contractor, never by us.

Do we need permission or a licence?

The venue's permission, yes; a pyrotechnic licence, no. Cold sparks are not a fireworks display — no explosive composition and no open flame — so no permit is required for the effect itself. We ask you to confirm approval with the venue and we are happy to speak to venue management or their safety officer directly.

Will the sparks burn or mark décor, drapes or ceiling fabric?

In normal operation, no — the sparks fall and extinguish quickly without scorching fabric or leaving burn marks. We also position every machine so the fall zone is clear: never beneath ceiling drapes, low fabric, netting or paper décor, and clear of curtains, backdrops, florals and table linen. Overhead beams, lighting bars and chandeliers are checked before the spark height is set.

Does the dance floor get wet or slippery?

No. Cold sparks leave no liquid and no oily residue, so the floor is dry and safe to use immediately after the effect. The dry-ice cloud effect is the one that sits at floor level, and it dries clean on its own.

What documentation can you give our venue?

We keep a Venue Safety & Technical Pack covering the effect and its specifications, décor and drape safety, smoke detectors and sprinklers, setup, clear zones and abort plan, plus a one-page sign-off sheet the venue can complete and return. Ask us and we will email it to your venue or coordinator.

How many machines do we need?

Two machines are typical for an entrance so the couple walks between them; four is common for a wider doorway or a larger stage. We recommend a number based on your room, not on upselling.

How long does each burst last?

Each burst is short — typically measured in seconds — and is timed to a specific cue such as the entrance announcement or the opening bar of a song.

How close can guests stand?

A clear safety zone is maintained around every machine for the duration of the effect. We set that zone on site with the venue and brief the MC so guests are kept clear.

Can they be used outdoors?

Yes, subject to wind, overhead cover and the venue's approval. Wind is the main factor and we will assess it on the day.

Who operates the machines?

Jacques operates them personally and remains with the equipment for the entire effect. They are never left running unattended. Cloud Nine Effects handles the setup and operation of the equipment and does not supply the machines for self-operation.

Are your cold spark machines CE and RoHS certified?

Yes. Cloud Nine Effects uses professional cold spark machines that are CE and RoHS certified. The machines are professionally set up and operated as part of our event-effects service.

Can the height of the cold sparks be adjusted?

Yes. The cold spark machines used by Cloud Nine Effects have adjustable spark height, allowing the effect to be adapted to the event setup, venue requirements and the particular moment being created.

When are cold sparks usually used at weddings?

Popular moments include the couple's entrance, first dance, cake cutting, champagne or toast moments, and other selected highlights during the celebration.

Can cold sparks be combined with dry ice?

Yes. A common programme is a cold spark entrance followed later by a Dancing on the Clouds first dance. We plan the timing so the two effects do not overlap.

How much setup time do you need?

Setup depends on the venue, access and the number of machines. We agree the setup window with you and the venue in advance.

Do you travel outside Gqeberha?

Yes. We regularly travel across the Eastern Cape and Garden Route, and travel is quoted per kilometre beyond our included radius.
