FAQ

Your Questions, Answered

Dry Ice

How long does the effect last?
10kg of dry ice is perfectly suited to one full first-dance song. Additional dry ice can be added on request if you'd like the effect to run longer.
How does the dry ice effect work?
The effect uses frozen CO₂ (dry ice) submerged in warm water, which produces a cool, low-lying cloud of CO₂ and water vapour across the floor — no glycol, oil or chemical haze. The machine is set up and operated by us, and our operator manages handling, ventilation and timing throughout. Venue requirements still apply.
What about ventilation and CO₂ — is the room size a concern?
Dry ice fog is sublimating CO₂ and cold water vapour, and because CO₂ is heavier than air the cloud stays low and disperses upward as it warms. For a single first-dance song (~3–4 minutes) using 10 kg of dry ice, the added CO₂ in a normally-ventilated venue — ballroom, hall, marquee or any room with doors, windows or HVAC airflow — stays far below workplace safety thresholds. We don't operate the effect in small, sealed, unventilated rooms, we cap the effect to the song length, and our operator monitors airflow and timing throughout. If your venue is unusually compact, we'll review it with you in advance.
Is it safe for guests with asthma or breathing sensitivities?
The fog contains only CO₂ and cold water vapour — no glycol, oil or chemical haze — so it is generally well tolerated. Guests with severe respiratory conditions may simply prefer to step back during the song. The cloud also dissipates quickly once the effect ends.
Will it set off the venue's smoke detectors?
Dry ice fog contains no combustion particulates, so it typically does not trigger photo-electric or ionisation smoke detectors. As a precaution we always notify the venue in advance and confirm the detector type before setup.
Will it make the floor wet?
The fog produces minimal moisture. Floors stay clean and safe to dance on throughout the effect.
Can it be used outdoors?
Dry ice performs best indoors with little wind. Outdoor use is possible in sheltered, still conditions — we'll advise after reviewing your venue.

Cold Sparks

Can cold sparks be used indoors?
Cold spark machines are designed for controlled event use and can often be used indoors, subject to your venue's rules and approval. They heat a granulated metal composite electrically rather than using gunpowder pyrotechnics, so there is no open flame, no smoke and no UV. We set clearances, position each machine and operate it ourselves, and we confirm the effect with your venue beforehand.
How close can guests stand to the machines?
We follow industry best practice and keep a minimum clearance of approximately 0.5 m around each unit, with the spark fountain aimed upward and away from guests, fabric and décor. Our operator positions and tests every machine before guests are in the area.
Will they set off the venue's smoke alarms?
Cold sparks emit no smoke, no flame and no significant heat, so they typically do not trigger smoke detectors. As with all our effects we notify the venue in advance and confirm the detector type before setup.
Do venues allow it?
Many venues do allow cold sparks, because the effect produces no open flame and no smoke. Requirements vary from venue to venue, so we always confirm the effect with your venue beforehand and final approval rests with you or your planner.
Does it produce heat or smoke?
The spark fountain is low-temperature compared with traditional pyrotechnics and produces no smoke — only a dramatic visual. We still keep an appropriate clearance around each machine and aim the fountain away from guests, fabric and décor.
How long does it last?
One 250g granule pack delivers approximately ±4 minutes of effect time, perfectly timed across your key moments.

Venue Requirements & Professional Operation

What equipment do you use for your effects?
Cloud Nine Effects uses professional CE and RoHS certified Cold Spark machines for our Indoor Cold Spark effects, while Dancing on the Clouds uses frozen CO₂ (dry ice). CE and RoHS certification applies to the Cold Spark equipment itself and does not replace venue approval or any requirements that may apply in South Africa.
What does your operator do on the day?
Setup, positioning, testing, live operation and pack-down. Our operator sets an appropriate clearance around each machine, watches timing and ventilation, and can delay or stop an effect where necessary.
What does the venue need from you?
Please confirm with your venue that the effect is permitted before your event. If the venue needs information about the effect or equipment before giving approval, let us know what information they require and we will provide the relevant details where available. Final venue approval remains the responsibility of the client or event planner.

General

Do you travel?
Yes. We are based in Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth) and our main service area covers the Eastern Cape and Garden Route — PE, Uitenhage, Despatch, Jeffreys Bay, Port Alfred, Grahamstown, Kirkwood, the Sundays River Valley, Cradock and Graaff-Reinet. We are happy to travel anywhere in South Africa (and beyond on request). The first 50 km of the return trip is on us; beyond that, travel is charged per kilometre and always appears as a separate line on your estimate.
Do you set up and operate?
Always. Every booking includes our trained operators, full setup, professional timing and pack-down.
What if weather affects the event?
We work closely with you and your venue to adapt timing, position and setup so your moment is delivered flawlessly.
